Winnipeg, February 9, 12 noon. Stop the war on dissent! No to Canada’s violating the Geneva Conventions on War! Rally at the Law Courts (Kennedy & York). I hope you will join the Winnipeg Coalition Against War and Racism this Saturday, Feb. 9 for an EMERGENCY RALLY against Canada’s decision to violate the Geneva Conventions on the conduct of war, and to support the right of dissent while Canada is involved an illegal war. Ottawa’s decision to violate the Geneva Conventions is a very serious development. Canadian soldiers are under orders to violate the Geneva Convetions on war. People may remember that the Nuremburg Tribunal which tried Nazi war criminals after the Second World War declared the defence of "following orders" to be invalid. Also, it is no honour to fight in an illegal war and that this rally is important to mobilize public opinion for alternative solutions to end terrorism. Toronto, February 13, 12 noon. Love Your Neighbours, Don't Imprison Them!St. Valentine's Eve Walk for Canada's Disappeared. A Walk in Support of Those Wrongfully Detained, A Walk to End Canadian Racism, A Walk to Get Canada Out of the Wars against Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Poor of the World. St. Valentine was a war resister who was no stranger to prison for his
acts of resistance. St. Valentine's Eve, meet at the Don Jail (Broadview and Gerrard), walk through downtown Toronto, winding up at the U.S. Consulate (360 University). The Don Jail is located on Don Jail Roadway, just north and slightly west of Broadview and Gerrard (take the Bloor/Danforth subway to Broadview station, catch any streetcar going south, get off at Gerrard, you'll see
the Don Jail on your right). Walk: Through some of the poorest areas of downtown Toronto, with stops to offer hearts of compassion to the Immigration and Refugee Board, to demand homes, not bombs at the Moss Park Armoury, and to present a letter at the U.S. Consulate demanding the return to Canada of  wrongfully imprisoned Pakistani-Canadian Shakir Baloch, shackled in the U.S. since mid-September under abominable conditions, as well as other Canadians suffering similar plights. Why St. Valentine's? Because the man for whom a disgustingly commercial holiday is named was in fact a resister to war and injustice. The days of the Roman Empire are very much like our own, what with massive violence to protect the wealth of the privileged few. In the ancient Roman Empire, Emperor Claudius II banned rituals leading to love and marriage, as young men in love or who married were reluctant to join the army, for which Claudius was having recruitment troubles. Although the Emperor declared engagements and marriages to be illegal, a priest called St. Valentine felt the Emperor's dictates were unjust and started to conduct marriages in secret. Once his activities became known he was jailed and later executed, in part for helping Christian prisoners escape. Sponsored by Toronto Action for Social Change, (416) 651-5800; tasc@web.ca.

In this session, speakers Rebecca Anderson and Robert Moskovitz will examine the fluid balance between the rights of the individual and the needs of the community. If we are willing to sacrifice liberties in the face of the terrorist threat, do we also accept that liberty is easier to give away than to reclaim? Where should the balance lie? And specifically, what are we talking about here? Location: Parkdale United Church (2919 - 8 Avenue NW). Immigrants and refugee claimants are being held in solitary confinement in Toronto jails and are being denied their rights. There have been cases of people being denied access to basic sanitation and medical care. Hearings are being held in jail cells using video cameras instead of detainees' live presence in courtrooms. At the Celebrity Inn, families are split up as the men are kept in a separate wing from the women and children. What else is going on at the Toronto West Detention Centre and the Celebrity Inn? Why aren't the authorities telling the public who is being held, and why? We demand: No punitive segregation! No secret hearings! Full disclosure of information on post-9/11 detainees! Rights and dignity for detainees! Amnesty for undocumented migrants! An end to secrecy!Rally at ...
