FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Outremont votes for peace
By-election result shows growing anger at the war in Afghanistan,

September 18, 2007 (Toronto) - The outcome of yesterday's by-election in Outremont should be seen as a referendum on Canada's role in Afghanistan. The New Democratic Party, which focused its campaign on the war, won over 48 per cent of the vote. A clear majority of Quebeckers opposes the war in Afghanistan and, in Outremont, voted for the only major party calling for the troops to be brought home now.

The Canadian Peace Alliance would like to congratulate the voters of Outremont for sending a strong message to Ottawa that we want this war to end.

The other political parties have vague and contradictory policies on the war in Afghanistan. The Liberals and the Bloc want the troops to stay until 2009 while the Conservatives want the mission to continue even longer.

The people of Canada have a much clearer position: they want the war to end now. On October 27, 2007, there will be protests against the war in Afghanistan all over the country. Event listings and more information about the day of action can be found on the website of the Canadian Peace Alliance: www.acp-cpa.ca.
