There are increasing indications that an attack on Iran is imminent.

Now is the time to act to try to stop it and to ensure that we are not aparty to any assault on Iran.

Please let me know if you will sign the statement below (please provide your name as you wish to be listed along with your most impressive credentials, if applicable). As soon as we have an impressive list of names, it will be sent to the media, the Prime Minister, Cabinet, all MPs and Senators.

Please pass the statement along to others as we need to move as quickly as possible. It would be particularly helpful to get it circulating to university professors, physicians, lawyers, organizational representatives and others whose names or positions carry substantial weight in our society.

We, the undersigned, are deeply alarmed by ongoing indications that the United States is planning an aerial assault on nuclear and military installations in Iran.

According to information leaked in April, 2006 to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Seymour Hersh of the New Yorker, the White House has contemplated the use of nuclear bunker busters to attack alleged underground nuclear facilities in Iran. Recent reports once again suggest that a conventional or possibly even a nuclear attack on Iran is imminent.

Nuclear facilities should never be the target of attack by either nuclear OR conventional weaponry. The consequences could be catastrophic for Iran, the Middle East and the wider world. We in the West are well aware of the dangers - attacks on nuclear reactors and facilities by terrorists have long been a nightmare scenario cited by our own government officials.

We do not believe that nuclear weapons are the true motive for the drive to war with oil-rich Iran. Not only is Iran still years away from developing a nuclear weapon, but other countries have been permitted to join the nuclear weapons club without threats and the resort to war. We are convinced that the only way the world will ever be safe from nuclear danger, is by applying the rules equally to all nations and demanding full nuclear disarmament by all states.

We believe that the more likely motives for a military attack are re-asserting control over Iran's vast oil resources and ending the challenge that Iran poses to US dominance in the Middle East.

We urge the Canadian government and all Canadians to speak out against a military strike on Iran. An aerial assault on Iran would be an environmental and human catastrophe that our already damaged world cannot afford.
