Stop the Attack on Iran

Sample Letter

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

The Canadian Peace Alliance comprised of 150 groups representing 4 million Canadians has been tracking, with growing alarm, the escalation of rhetoric and events in the Middle East that signal an imminent attack by the United States on Iran and its nuclear facilities.

Among the many signs that an attack on Iran is being considered is the threatening and provocative language in recent speeches by both President Bush and Secretary of Sate Condoleezza Rice; additional aircraft carriers deployed to the Persian Gulf, most recently the USS John C Stennis and two British mine hunters, HMS Blyth and HMS Ramsey; US Patriot missiles just deployed to the Persian Gulf; increased number of US nuclear submarines in Persian Gulf; Admiral Fallon named Centcom commander; Israeli pilots training for Iran bombing mission; F16 fighter planes deployed to the Incirlik base in Turkey (knowing that F-16s can deliver B61-11 nuclear bunker busters, and there may be such bombs at Incirlik. )

Public policy groups in the US including the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Center for American Progress, independent policy analysts , as well as a growing number of editorials in newspapers around the world are denouncing any such action while warning of the potential catastrophic and cascading consequences of an attack on Iran. Such an attack could thrust the Middle East, Central Asia and indeed the world into political and economic chaos, while creating devastating radioactive fallout. The attack will also potentially kill and maim millions of people and potentially ignite a Third World 'nuclear war' with planetary consequences too horrific to contemplate.

Indeed the Council on Foreign Relations January 16th Daily analysis "On course for Iran" agreed with the assertion of CFR Senior Fellow Steven Simon, who stated last spring: "The moment the first US warheads detonate over an Iranian nuclear installation, the United Sates will be at war with the Islamic Republic."

Perhaps the grimmest reminder of all in the past few days may have been the decision of the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists--in consultation with a Board of Sponsors that includes 18 Nobel laureates--to move the minute hand of the "Doomsday Clock" from seven to five minutes to midnight. The deteriorating state of global affairs led them to conclude that we stand at the brink of a second nuclear age.

The Canadian Peace Alliance's resolution on Iran states:
"Be it resolved that the CPA prepare its member organizations to mobilize immediately against any attack on Iran should it become clear that one is coming."

In that capacity the CPA with the support of our broad alliance of growing numbers of organizations calls upon you to withdraw Canada's supporting military presence in the Middle East and to begin immediate negotiations bi-laterally and multilaterally to reverse the escalation of this potentially catastrophic development threatening humanity , the planet and civilization.

A government's first responsibility is to the security and prosperity of its peoples. In your rush to cooperate with the US Bush administration in its misguided 'war on terrorism', your government has contributed to making Canada and the world far less secure than it has ever been.

Stopping this attack would, at this late stage, require determination, initiative, transparency, and courage, and it would have to happen fast.

Please examine the burgeoning and well-reasoned policy analyses against a US or Israeli attack on Iran, consult with parliament, listen to the people and do what is right for Canada and the World. You can make a difference at this time in history by publicly withdrawing Canada's support for this nightmarish and misguided military and foreign policy strategy.
