Condemn the killing of peace activists in Gaza flotilla

The Canadian Peace Alliance is urging all member groups to join rallies and pickets to condemn the killing of human rights and peace activists by the Israeli forces. The cold blooded murder of people trying to provide basic humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza is just the latest in a string of brutal attacks on the Palestinian people and their supporters.

Demonstrations are happening each day in Canada. The dates for the events are in bold.

Palestinian civil society groups have joined together to call for a global day of action on June 5th to call for an immediate end to the seige of Gaza. You can find the call here.

If you are organizing an emergency event please send the details to cpa@web.ca so we can post the events.

Statement from Denis Lemelin, President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers

May 31, 2010
Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Office of the Prime Minister
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa ON K1A 0A2

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

I am writing to you on behalf of the 54,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. You will be aware that the Israeli navy, in an act of piracy in international waters, has hijacked the international flotilla of ships which was attempting to deliver essential humanitarian aid to Gaza. The aid includes construction materials which would enable the people of Gaza to rebuild the homes destroyed by Israel in Operation Cast Lead in 2009.

There are nearly 700 people on board the boats, all of whom are civilians from around the world, including Members of Parliament from a number of nations, eminent writers and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. They have undertaken this mission out of concern for the people of Gaza, who are now entering their fourth year under siege, without access to basic necessities. They pose no threat to Israel, and are completely unarmed.

Despite this, the Israeli navy has attacked the flotilla outside of international waters this morning resulting in fatalities estimated by the Israeli military itself as 10 and by news sources at possibly in excess of 20 with another large number injured. Israeli news sources say that hospitals around Ashdod have been told to prepare for many injured people arriving.

I urge you to act swiftly to condemn this attack on the peace flotilla, which was breaking no international laws, and, that you demand to know the fate of those on board the vessels and to ensure that Israel releases the vessels immediately to allow this vital aid to reach its destination. Since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Canada and has profusely praised you for maintaining strong relations with Israel, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers believes that you have an obligation to condemn this brutal attack.

Israel's occupation of Gaza is illegal under international law, and it has been accused in a UN report of committing war crimes in Gaza.

Your obligation must be towards a group of citizens peacefully attempting to deliver humanitarian aid, than to a country which repeatedly violates international treaties. CUPW calls on you to end the government's silence over Israel's aggressive actions against the flotilla, and intervene now to demand its safe passage to Gaza.

CUPW is calling on you to condemn this wanton act of piracy against the peaceful flotilla taking aid to the people of Gaza. Finally, CUPW is calling upon you to take every step possible to bring about an end to the inhuman treatment of the people of Gaza by acting to end the siege and blockade that is taking place against them by the Israeli Government.

Yours sincerely
Denis Lemelin
National President Canadian Union of Postal Workers

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 31, 2010

CAF calls upon the Prime Minister to call for an international inquiry into the massacre of human rights activists by Israel and for the lifting of the siege of Gaza

The Canadian Arab Federation (CAF) finds it shameful that Prime Minister Harper is meeting and feting Benjamin Netanyahu while the Israeli navy has committed piracy and massacre in international waters against the Freedom Flotilla, a humanitarian aid convoy headed towards the Gaza Strip. Israeli helicopters fired on the six boats and boarded five of them killing 23 human rights activists and wounding at least another 60 on the Turkish boat Mavi Marmari, and abducted hundreds of humanitarian activists from 40 countries on the boats, including Irish Noble laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.

"This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip," said Cynthia McKinney, a former U.S. Congresswoman and presidential candidate. "President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that's exactly what we tried to do.”

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released yesterday, the Palestinians living in Gaza are "trapped in despair." Thousands of Gazans whose homes were destroyed earlier during Israel 's December 2008/January 2009 massacre are still without shelter despite pledges of almost $4.5 billion in aid, because Israel refuses to allow cement and other building material into the Gaza Strip. The report also notes that hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to Israel 's disruption of medical supplies.

"The aid we were carrying is a symbol of hope for the people of Gaza, hope that the sea route would open for them, and they would be able to transport their own materials to begin to reconstruct the schools, hospitals and thousands of homes destroyed during the onslaught of "Cast Lead". Our mission is a gesture to the people of Gaza that we stand by them and that they are not alone" said fellow passenger Mairead Maguire, winner of a Noble Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland.

"Israel once again committed a massacre of unarmed civilians to add to the hundreds of massacres committed before but this time they have really gone way too far and alienated the international community with this horrendous crime. Israel 's deliberate and premeditated attack on these unarmed boats is an act of piracy and a clear violation of international law; and the killing and wounding of nearly 100 human rights activists representing 40 countries is a crime against humanity. The Harper government must strongly condemn these criminal activities and human rights violations. It must join the European Union in calling for an international inquiry into this massacre and demanding that Israel lift its inhumane and obscene 3-year siege of Gaza” said

Khaled Mouammar, CAF’s National President.
