Winnipeg

April 4th will mark the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The anniversary sees a “new” NATO, doubled in size since its founding, with an expanded international role.

Not all the opposition will be centred in Strasbourg, as witnessed by the recent speech given by Russian President Medvedev, in which he linked new Russian military spending with an expanded NATO.

Given these developments Peace Alliance Winnipeg believes it is essential for Canadians to examine the issue of NATO. The question to be resolved is a simple one: “Should Canada remain in NATO?”

The Debaters:

* Dr. James Fergusson, Director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies, University of Manitoba
* Professor Henry Heller, Department of History, University of Manitoba

When: Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 1 p.m.
Where: St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 641 St. Matthew’s Avenue (corner of St. Matthew and Maryland).

Peace Alliance Winnipeg

There will be protest rally against NATO, calling on Canada to leave the military alliance of imperialist countries tomorrow and for Canadian troops to leave Afghanistan immediately:

Everyone is welcome, bring your family, friends, workmates, placards, banners.

The Manitoba Peace Council is developing a program of speakers; please contact us if you would like to part of the program.

This is part of a world-wide protest against NATO on its 60th anniversary; this is one of 14 known actions across Canada, according to the Canadian Peace Alliance website - a good start on renewing the campaign for Canada to leave NATO.
