Toronto, April 10, 7 pm. What really happened in Toronto, March 22-23? The newsmedia reported that on March 22nd and 23rd, on the occasion of the provincial government's leadership convention, over 500 people from the Ontario Common Front converged in Toronto to protest several years of severe neo-liberal restructuring in Ontario. What the newsmedia have not reported is the extreme levels of repression and violence that police unleashed on demonstrators over the two days. Police far outnumbered demonstrators, aimed guns at them, clubbed them with batons, knocked cycling demonstrators off their bikes, confiscated union flags and shot tear-gas at people. About 1 out of 8 demonstrators were brutally arrested, bound by tight handcuffs, thrown in vans for several hours and strip-searched. The story of this excessive police violence must be told. This public meeting will include a report from the Ontario Common Front legal committee, video footage of police violence from March 22nd and 23rd in Toronto, first hand testimonies from victims of police violence and a perspective from Anna Willats, member of the Toronto Police Accountability Coalition and the Committee to Stop Targetted Policing.Location: OISE, 252 Bloor St. West (at St-George subway station), room 2212. Organized by CUPE 3903 members and friends.

Calgary, April 10, 7:30 pm. Protest Proposed Military Action Against Iraq: an info and letter-writing session. Location: Parkdale United Church (2919 - 8 Avenue NW). We've been down this path before. A new Persian Gulf war will only hurt the innocent civilians whose society has not recovered from our last attempt at domination. Iraq needs a better solution. We should be helping to create a democratic, prosperous ally, not a ruined people who will have cause to hate us forever. Information on the Iraqi situation will be available from members of the Calgary branch of the Canadian Network to End Sanctions on Iraq. Sponsored by Project Ploughshares Calgary. More information: contact Kerry Duncan McCartney, (403) 270-7366, or email projectp@cadvision.com. Cost: free.

Ottawa, April 11, 7:30 pm. The Historical Use of Deception to Rally Public Support for Wars. A talk by Richard Sanders, Coordinator, Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT). My purpose is to briefly review the historical phenomena of creating or manipulating false incidents as pretexts for war and to cite some of the many specific examples that are well-documented from U.S. history. I want to make it clear that the purpose of this talk is not to argue that the September 11 attacks are an example of the type of incident that I am describing. If the public was told that our country should go to war so a small group of multi-millionaires and billionaires will be able to ruthlessly exploit, plunder and profit from natural resources in far away lands, people would say "no." If the public was told to support a war because our business leaders wanted to install or prop up a friendly regime in a faraway land so that their sweat shops and factories could continue to use virtual slave labour, people would say "no." If the public was told to support a war to empower a foreign government's attacks against unions, human rights activists and advocates for strict environmental laws, then the public here would say "no." Because the war planners know that people will not support their wars, if the truth were told about why they are being fought, they have for millenia invented deceptive pretexts for going to war. They have manipulated public opinion and used countless forms of trickery to make people think that wars are being fought for noble and humanitarian purposes. To be aware of this history of deception is strengthen our guard against falling prey to such trickery in the future. Location: Parkdale United Church, 429 Parkdale Ave. (at the corner of Parkdale and Gladstone Aves.). Organized by Ploughshares Ottawa.

The multi-faceted, methodical building of a peace based on sustainable living and justice for all is humanity's only hope. The conference objectives are: to explore opportunities for progress in a unipolar and inequitable world; to propose resistance strategies and alternatives to war and the militarization of state functions; to identify changes already underway that signal the possibility of a better world. Victoria, April 13, 10 am. Workshop: "Globalization and Social Values - Moving from Thought to Action." Do you believe, as we do, that globalization is undermining important social and ethical values in our civil society? There is an alternative: a society with a value system that promotes an attitude of problem-solving through dialogue, maintains the inherent worth and dignity of each one of us, and builds community based on justice, equality and compassion. Building such a society is no small task, but it is one that we - activists from civil society organizations and religious communities - have decided to do something about. The workshop will involve about 30 people who are already familiar with globalization and its potential implications. It will commence with a panel of 4 speakers (15 minutes each). Confirmed speakers are Dr Mary-Wynne Ashford, formerly of Physicians for Global Survival, and David Ball of Amnesty International; there will also be a leader from the religious community, and another from social community-building. Location: St. Aidens Church, 3703 St. Aidan's Street (north of Mt Tolmie off Cedar Hill X Rd). Please indicate by phone (592-6484) if you plan to participate and your organization. We must know the numbers for lunch! Cost: $5 (limited income $2) - includes sandwich lunch. Sponsors: Social Responsibility Committee of the First Unitarian Church of Victoria; Kairos; Council of Canadians.
