PETITION REGARDING CANADIAN INVOLVEMENT IN
THE US NATIONAL MISSILE DEFENCE (NMD) PROGRAM
TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED
We the undersigned residents of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following:
THAT the Government of Canada may be asked to support the US National Missile Defence (NMD) program, to be operated by the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD);
THAT NMD is a unilateral initiative of the United States, which plans to dominate space by "integrating Space Forces into warfighting capabilities" (as outlined in United States Space Command document "Vision for 2020") that no other major country supports;
THAT NMD would be a step towards the deployment of weapons in space and lead to a new arms race;
THAT NMD would violate the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, and run counter to Canadas commitment as a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to promote complete nuclear disarmament;
THAT these Treaties are cornerstones of the international non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament regimes long supported by Canada;
THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to:
- declare that Canada objects to the National Missile Defence program of the United States;
- play a leadership role in banning nuclear weapons and missile flight tests.
